Sit Down Young Stranger, A Tribute To Gordon Lightfoot. Performed by Steve Rae and the Pony Man Band. A retrospective concert covering much of Gordon Lightfoot’s most popular music. Steve Rae is a Stratford/Muskoka based singer/songwriter who was greatly influenced by Lightfoot’s music. Rae discovered his music in the late 60’s and performed it relentlessly, leading to his high school nickname, “Gordie”. He has performed mostly as a solo act accompanying himself on guitar but also touring with Steve Rae and Muskoka Boathouse, the Steve Rae Band and with Pony Man Band members Torbay and Holden in The Islannados. After playing a Facebook Live tribute on the passing of Gordon Lightfoot viewed by tens of thousands, these were a few of the comments: “Thank you again, Steve, for keeping our Gordon’s music alive through your music and your voice, so like his own.” Tobermory, Ontario “You sound just like him. Thank you so much.” St. Johns Newfoundland “I’ve always said that you sound more like Gordon Lightfoot than he does.” Calgary, Alberta “He will live on through you. Beautiful voice and music. Thank you for sharing with us.” Nova Scotia “Wow, you sound just like him. He is channeling thru you today, his last gift for those grieving today, thank you.” Antigonish Nova Scotia “You can really hear Gordon in this music, outstanding tribute.” Sechelt, British Columbia “Outstanding, Thank you Steven, you sound more like Gordon Lightfoot than he has now for a few years. A great entertainer is gone but his music will live on as long as you are performing.” Ovieto, Florida The Pony Man Band is made up of multi-instrumentalist Mick Torbay who will be concentrating on bass for this show, channeling his inner Rick Haynes. Torbay started his musical career as a performer at Canada’s Wonderland, was touring pianist for the Steve Rae band, honed his skills as a top jingle writer and studio musician. He was bass player/vocalist for the rock band The Free Press and presently is one of the top commercial voices heard across Canada. The other member of the Pony Man Band is lead guitarist Gerry Holden. A lifelong student of the guitar, Holden has performed thousands of concerts and shows with a variety of bands including Old School, The Islannados, and as part of the duo Nightlife that performed for many years on the Muskoka resort circuit. Over 40 years ago he studied and learned the guitar parts played by both Gordon Lightfoot and Red Shea and now brings that hard earned knowledge to the Pony Man band.
These three musicians are donating the proceeds of this performance to the Rotary Club of Gravenhurst’s Rotary Rocks The Barge fundraising campaign to build amphitheatre seating for the Gull Lake Barge stage in Gravenhurst.
